5 Outdoor Living Trends to Watch in 2021

With a 2020 that forced many to stay home, we are emerging into 2021 with a lot of new home design trends! Outdoor projects have increased tremendously this year as people try to spend more time outdoors without going to public spaces.  Wood has always been widely used in construction, especially for decks and pergolas.

Thanks to its excellent characteristics of stability and strength, this natural material represents the right choice for many projects. However, not all woods are equally resistant to exterior conditions, nor are they equally suited for outdoor living projects.  Here are some of the five Outdoor Living trends we are seeing for 2021:

1) Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor Kitchen

Equipped with traditional grills, but also with ovens, barbecues, and rotisserie accessories, outdoor kitchens can be an interesting solution to equip the outdoor dining area in a functional way. Outdoor kitchens are often made of durable materials, such as stainless steel, natural or reconstructed stone, and hardwood.  Garapa, Ipe, and Cumaru do not need to be treated with any finishes for exposure to the elements, something that is important when working with heat.

The cooking zones can be powered by wood, charcoal, gas, or electrically; the type of power supply must be chosen according to the needs and the type of use to be made. Depending on your needs and the style of outdoor furniture, you can choose how to clad your exterior kitchen.  Some choose to clad the kitchen with 1×6 decking boards using the tongue and groove installation method, while others prefer more design and use 1×2 or 1×3 boards.

2) Outdoor Showers

Wooden outdoor showers have become a growing trend.  Homeowners feel it adds an element of luxury, beauty, and comfort. Very convenient for those who live near the sea but also for those who love the pool, it can embrace many styles, from modern to romantic, and accommodate various accessories, depending on the use made them.

Garapa is an ideal wood for this sort of project, as it can resist the moisture created by the shower. Making the outdoor shower out of wood also gives a more spa-like feel to the wash area.

3) Wooden Sheds

With more people planting and gardening, new storage space for all the gardening tools is a must!  Wooden sheds are a way to extend storage space in your house.  Choosing garapa wood for your shed will let the woodshed look more natural than a metallic or plastic shed, and thus blend into the garden better.

Also, garapa wood does not heat up in the sun the way metal or plastic do, thus providing a cooler environment for your stored items. In short, adding a garapa shed is a simple and effective solution that can give you more storage space and make your garden and outdoor space completely new in terms of beauty and habitability.  Garapa as well as other hardwoods is robust and resistant, with guaranteed durability over time.

4) Decks

2021 is sure to bring more outdoor renovations.  One of the biggest trends?  Decking!  An outdoor deck creates a warm and contemporary environment, whether it is built with long garapa boards (we suggest the 1×6 board dimension in 8 to 16-foot lengths) or with deck tiles.

Outdoor wood flooring, in a word decking, is a very suggestive element for any project. The decking or “outdoor parquet” is a type of wooden flooring that can be used for porches, terraces, gardens, pool edges, gazebos, and walkways.  Being constantly subjected to bad weather, a common wood cannot be used!

A hardwood such as garapa, ipe, or cumaru should be used in order to ensure the structure withstands the test of time.  Choosing garapa will avoid splinters in case of walking barefoot.

5) Benches

As people use the exterior of their homes more, the right type of outdoor seating is required.  Gone are the days of rocking chairs on the porch.  The coming trend is having benches built to custom fit your space.  We have seen a lot more built-in benches as outdoor kitchens are on the rise. Casual seating around the garden can also be achieved with stand-alone benches.

Garapa and other hardwoods are being used as this type of hardwood can withstand exterior conditions such as sun, wind, rain, and snow.  Whether made completely of garapa hardwood or combined with metallic elements, decorated with fun cushions, or left to show its natural beauty, garapa is surely the right choice for extra outdoor seating.
